PARCO ARCHELOGICO

Castiglione di Paludi

Important stronghold of the Bruttii, or city of Greek origins, possibly founded by the king of Epirus Alexander Molossus? Although its origins remain unclear, we can be certain that Castiglione di Paludi was produced by a highly skilled and exceedingly experienced team of builders. The “theater”, the public area, and above all the city walls with their towers and the monumental East Gate represent one of the best preserved examples of Hellenistic age architecture in southern Italy, all immersed in an uncontaminated natural setting which only increases the intrinsic allure of the archaeological remains.

The first phase of the archaeological area’s restoration was completed thanks to Progetto Calabria 2000-2006.
